Do I need a permit for my storefront or exterior sign?
In many medium-to-large cities and counties, the answer is almost always yes. Metro code requires a zoning permit and a building permit before a sign goes up or is altered, plus an electrical permit if the sign is lit. There are a few exceptions. Some small signs are exempt, and routine work like changing the copy on a changeable-copy sign or repainting an existing structure usually needs no permit. Two rules tend to surprise people. Roof signs are not allowed at all. And if the type of business at the address is changing, a Use and Occupancy permit can be required before the sign permit will be issued. The permitting is detailed, but it is normally handled for you by whoever makes the sign, which is what the next answer covers.
